3. Biography David LaChapelle was born March 11, 1963 in Fairfield Connecticut. LaChapelle’s photography career began in the 1980s. He began showing his artwork in New York City and caught the eye of Andy Warhol. Warhol gave LaChapelle his first job as a photographer at Interview Magazine. The photographs got him positive attention and got him shooting for a variety of top editorial publications. LaChapelle’s work has graced covers and pages of famous magazines like Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair.

David LaChapelle’s Celebrity Portraits: Michael Jackson, Rihanna, and More

Just when David LaChapelle thought he was out, he got pulled back in again. In 2006, the celebrity and fashion photographer, best known for his high-concept, supersaturated-color images, planned on putting down his camera for good. The “Fellini of photography” was retiring to a farm in Hawaii to raise goats, chickens, fruit, and vegetables. He’d purchased some land—a former nudist colony in a remote Maui rain forest—and was six months into converting the place when a German gallery called to inquire about exhibiting new work.

“I don’t really shoot celebrities, not anymore,” LaChapelle remembers telling them. To his surprise, the Jablonka Galerie wanted to mount a show of different LaChapelle works, including the fine art photography he thought no one in the art world wanted from a man who made his career producing advertisements, music videos, theatrical productions, and the acclaimed 2005 dance documentary Rize.
