Yvonne Marianne Elliman (born December 29, 1951)[1] is an American singer, songwriter, and actress who performed for four years in the first cast of the stage musical Jesus Christ Superstar. She scored a number of hits in the 1970s and achieved a US No. 1 hit with "If I Can't Have You". The song also reached No. 9 on the Adult Contemporary chart and number 4 on the UK Singles Chart. A vocalist, Yvonne Elliman was born in Hawaii. While in high school in Hawaii, she formed her first band, We Folk, in the mid-60s. Moving to London at age 17 in 1969, she busked on the streets and performed in clubs as a singer / guitarist. While singing at the Pheasantry folk club on Kings Road in Chelsea, she was discovered by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. They cast her as Mary Magdalene in their musical Jesus Christ Superstar. After performing the role on stage in London and New York, she appeared in the film version, for which she won a Golden Globe award. The film soundtrack also generated a hit single for her, “I Don’t Know How to Love Him.”

Yvonne released her self-titled debut in 1972.  It included a cover of Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home”. Her second album, Food of Love (1973) featured Pete Townshend on a cover of The Who’s “I Can’t Explain”.

Yvonne Elliman Marianne was born in Honolulu (Hawaii) on December 29, 1951. Born to an Irish father and a Japanese mother, Yvonne grew up in the Manoa neighborhood of Honolulu. At four he learned to play the ukelele and at seven he began taking piano lessons. She attended "President Theodore Roosevelt High School" in Honolulu and around that time, she formed his first folk music band "We Folk" with his schoolmates. Yvonne performed as a singer and guitarist achieving good results in local talent shows. At 18 he moved to London and began performing in bars and clubs. She was noticed and discovered by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, who asked her to sing "Mary Magdalene" for the original audio recording of "Jesus Christ Superstar". After the album was released in 1970, they invited and convinced Yvonne to move to New York and join the cast of the play on a four-year contract. After this long experience, Yvonne signed a record deal with “RSO Records” and participated in various tours alongside Eric Clapton.
