Biography
José Victoriano (Carmelo Carlos) González-Pérez was born in Madrid in 1887. From 1902-1904, he studied drawing and contributed to local periodicals. From 1904-1905 he studied painting with José Mareno Carbonero, considered one of the last great history painters of the 19th century. Also in 1905, he changed his name to Juan Gris.
In 1906, Gris moved to Paris where he became friends with artists Georges Braque, Fernand Léger, Pablo Picasso and the the poets and art critics Guillaume Apollinaire and Maurice Raynal. He also contributed darkly humorous illustrations to journals L'Assiette au beurre, Le Charivari, and Le Cri de Paris.
He began to paint seriously in 1911 when he developed his personal Cubist style. Closely connected to the innovative artistic genre Cubism, his works are among the movement's most distinctive.

De Juan Gris, mort prématurément à l’âge de 40 ans, Christian Zervos écrivait :
“Juan Gris est toujours à la recherche d’un langage nouveau pour en faire un vêtement de la pensée”.
Les deux portraits de Madame Henriette Reverdy, que nous avons l’honneur de vous présenter dans cette nouvelle mise à jour, témoignent de l’amitié et la collaboration qui liaient Juan Gris au poète Pierre Reverdy. En 1915, Juan Gris illustre son ouvrage “Poèmes en prose”, puis en 1916 “Au soleil du plafond” (finalement édité en 1955 par Tériade), tandis qu’en mars 1917, l’auteur publie dans sa revue “Nord-Sud” le manifeste “Sur le cubisme”.
