Air Force 4-star General Darren W. McDew was born in Rantoul, Illinois, on September 29, 1960. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in engineering in 1982 from the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia.
With his officer’s commission, McDew trained as a pilot in the 82d Flying Training Wing, Williams Air Force Base, Arizona. He next took combat crew training in the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker in the 93rd Bomb Wing at Castle Air Force Base, California. From 1984 to 1989, McDew was at the 42nd Air Refueling Squadron, Loring Air Force Base, Maine, as a pilot instructor and flight commander. From 1989 to 1996, McDew served in administrative and support capacities in Washington, D.C., most notably as Air Force aide to President Bill Clinton at the White House from 1994 to 1996. In 2000, McDew was promoted to the rank of Colonel and was put in charge of the 62nd Operations Group, McChord Air Force Base in Washington State. General Darren W. McDew served with distinction in the United States military for 36 years. Throughout his career, he had the opportunity to lead at all echelons; culminating as the 12th Commander, United States Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM). As a unified combatant command comprised of all the armed services, he served as the senior uniformed officer responsible for global air, land, and sea transportation, and patient movement for the Department of Defense. Prior to leading TRANSCOM, General McDew was the commander of Air Mobility Command, Scott AFB.
General McDew was commissioned in 1982 following his graduation from Virginia Military Institute. He began his flying career at Loring AFB, Maine and his staff assignments include serving as a member of the Air Force Chief of Staff Operations Group, Air Force aide to the President, chief of the Air Force Senate Liaison Division and the director of Air Force Public Affairs. General McDew served as vice director for strategic plans and policy for the Chairman of the Joint

Upon graduating from Virginia Military Institute in 1982, Gen McDew received his commission and began his flying career at Loring AFB, Maine. Over his 36-year career, his staff assignments included "serving as a member of the Air Force Chief of Staff Operations Group, Air Force aide to the President, chief of the Air Force Senate Liaison Division and the director of Air Force Public Affairs. Gen McDew served as vice director for strategic plans and policy for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff." Over the years, he commanded at the squadron, group and wing levels as well as at an Air Force direct reporting unit. He deployed in support of ongoing operations in Central and Southwest Asia as an air expeditionary group commander and later as the director of mobility forces.
