Finnish pagan metal band
Moonsorrow is a Finnish pagan metal band formed in Helsinki in 1995. Musically, the band incorporates elements of black metal and folk metal in their sound. The band call their sound "epic heathen metal"[1] and try to distance themselves from the term "Viking metal". They have distanced themselves from other folk metal bands, emphasising that their music is pagan and spiritual and is challenging for its listeners, rather than happy or danceable.[2] The band members have varying levels of pagan belief[3] but they draw on pagan spirituality for lyrics and inspiration.[4]
History
The group's earliest formation consisted of cousins Ville Sorvali (vocals and bass) and Henri Sorvali (guitar and keyboards; also keyboards for Finntroll, Barathrum, and session member of Ensiferum) who released various demos that were much more characteristic of melodic black metal than future releases.
Their debut album, Suden Uni, recorded in early 2000, was released in early 2001, along with Tämä Ikuinen The Moonsorrow saga began in late 1995, when the cousins Henri and Ville Sorvali got together with the idea of creating folkish, epic metal art. The first demo Thorns of Ice was recorded in early 1996; fairly enough, half of the material disappeared, so the tape was never released. The crusaders of epic heathen metal, Moonsorrow was founded in 1995 with the goal of creating metal art with a good touch of national romanticism and a distinctively pagan approach. Between 1996 and 2001 Moonsorrow released 4 demos and an album before signing with Spinefarm. The 2nd album, Voimasta ja kunniasta was released in 2001 and its follow-up Kivenkantaja (2003) already hit the Finnish album charts at #16. It also took the band to their first shows abroad in 2004. Verisäkeet (2005) reached the charts as well, and saw Moonsorrow play their 1st show on the other side of the Atlantic and join Primordial for the band’s 1st full European tour, both in 2006. Their 5th album, Viides luku - Hävitetty included just two songs, both of them checking in at around the 30 minute mark, paving way to new heights of epic pagan art, continued on the 68-minute long “EP” Tulimyrsky with another 30-minute song. 2011 sees the release of the most majestic album of the year, Varjoina kuljemme kuolleiden maassa (As Shadows We Walk In The Land Of The Dead). In spring 1997 Moonsorrow released Metsä, the demo that is generally considered the debut recording of the band, gaining some publicity in the press and a small fanbase. Also another tape, bluntly called Promo, was recorded, but due to a divine (analog) intervention it was never released either.
Through 1998 the band worked on their next demo, Tämä Ikuinen Talvi, which was later released in early 1999. This was to be the last demo recording in Moonsorrow's history, since a deal with obscure Plasmatica Records was inked shortly afterwards. Marko Tarvonen joined the band as the third member, and Moonsorrow was ready for the debut album.
