Richard "RickLee Zumwalt, Jr. (September 24, 1951 – March 19, 2003)[1] was a professional world champion arm-wrestler and actor. He is known for playing the character of Bob 'Bull' Hurley in the 1987 Sylvester Stallone movie, Over the Top.

Life and Career[]

Zumwalt began armwrestling in the early 1970's because of restrictions on his sporting options due to asthma, and won multiple championships during his career.[2] He was cast as Bob "Bull" Hurley in the 1987 Sylvester Stallone movie Over The Top, which helped bring the sport of armwrestling into popular culture, and led to Zumwalt being cast in later roles.[3] By 1994, he was also performing as a strongman in Cirque de Soleil shows.[2]

Later Life and Death[]

Zumalt spent much of his later years talking with kids about the dangers of drugs and alcohol that he had experienced in his own life.[2]

Zumalt died on the morning of March 19, 2003 after suffering a major heart attack.

Richard D. Zumwalt (born May 19, 1965) was a defensive linebacker for the Sacramento Surge of the World League of American Football which later became known as NFL Europe.

College career

Rick played college football at Golden West Junior College from 1983 to 1985 before transferring to Arizona State University, where he played from 1986 to 1987. He was part of the ASU Sun Devil football team that won the 1987 Rose Bowl by upending the favored Michigan Wolverines.[1]

Professional career

Rick went undrafted in the 1988 NFL draft but was picked up as a free agent by the Atlanta Falcons and then the Los Angeles Raiders. He was a preseason player only as he did not make the regular season rosters of either squad.[2] When the WLAF formed, Rick was signed by the Sacramento Surge and played 10 games with the team in 1991.[3]

Career

In addition to his role in Over the Top, Zumwalt appeared in several other films. In 1988, he had a small but memorable role fighting Sean Connery in a bar in The Presidio. In 1992, he played a tattooed strongman, one of the Penguin's henchmen, in Batman Returns.

Zumwalt also appeared on TV. He co-starred as "Judge Mental" on the kids' gameshow Pictionary and also had a supporting role in a 1990 episode of Night Court.

In the mid-1990s, Zumwalt began appearing as a strongman in the popular theatrical production Alegría by Cirque du Soleil.
