Wilson’s large and varied discography with Sinfonia of London has received near-universal critical acclaim, and in the autumn of 2024 they released their twenty-fourth album since 2019. Their recordings have earned several awards, including numerous BBC Music Magazine Awards for recordings of Korngold’s Symphony in F sharp (2020), Respighi’s Roman Trilogy (2021), Dutilleux’s Le Loup (2022), Oklahoma! (2024) and a disc of works by Vaughan Williams, Howells, Delius and Elgar which won both the Orchestral Award and Recording of the Year. The Observer described the Respighi recording as “Massive, audacious and vividly played” and The Times declared it one of the three “truly outstanding accounts of this trilogy” of all time, after those by Toscanini (1949) and Muti (1984).

In recent seasons these have included the London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Budapest Festival Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, and Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He has also conducted productions at English National Opera and Glyndebourne Festival Opera. For many years he appeared across the UK and abroad with the John Wilson Orchestra and in 2018 relaunched Sinfonia of London with which he has recorded several award-winning CDs, their wide repertoire ranging from Respighi to Britten and Dutilleux. The John Wilson Orchestra was formed by the British conductor John Wilson in 1994. It performs the original arrangements of MGMmusicals and the works of Rodgers and Hammerstein. The orchestra performed annually in The Proms summer festival between 2009 and 2019.[1]
Focus and configuration
The John Wilson Orchestra has been acclaimed for showing how "authentic period performance" extends to screen musicals.[2]
In an interview with Rebecca Franks for the BBC Music Magazine prior to the 2010 Proms season, John Wilson explained how the specific make-up of the orchestra reflects this purpose:
The orchestra’s been together a good 15 years and its make-up is very specific. It’s modelled on the old contract movie orchestras in America. And that's basically the combination of a dance-band brass, rhythm and saxophone section, so four trumpets, four trombones, five saxes who all double, and a rhythm section, who are all very specific specialists in this style.
