Carter Bays is an American author, composer, and television showrunner renowned for co-creating the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, where he served as showrunner, writer, and executive producer for all nine seasons. A Wesleyan University graduate, Bays began his career writing for the Late Show With David Letterman alongside Craig Thomas.
His contributions extend to shows like American Dad!, Quintuplets, and Oliver Beene, and he co-created Fox’s The Goodwin Games. In 2022, Bays ventured into literature with his debut novel The Mutual Friend, published by Dutton Books, and served as executive producer on Hulu’s How I Met Your Father.

Carter Loard Bays (born August 12, 1975)[1] is an American television showrunner[clarification needed], writer and producer. He is best known as co-creator, writer, and executive producer of the CBSsitcomHow I Met Your Mother. His show has been nominated for seven Primetime Emmy Awards, including Best Original Song for "Nothing Suits Me Like a Suit."[2]
Bays also co-founded the band The Solids, who perform the theme song to How I Met Your Mother, "Hey Beautiful".[3]

Co-creator, screenwriter, showrunner, and executive producer of the Emmy Award winning CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, Shaker Heights native Carter Loard Bays was born on August 12, 1975. His father, James, was a retired corporate attorney, and his mother, Martha, was a minister in the United Church of Christ. While a student at Shaker Heights High School, Bays’ play, Five Visits from Mr. Whitcomb, was produced on Broadway during the 1993 Young Playwrights’ Festival.
An English student at Wesleyan University, Bay befriended fellow Shaker Heights native Craig David Thomas, another writing and band enthusiast.
