Benjamin Zander (born 9 March 1939 in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, England) is an English conductor, who is currently the musical director of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.
Biography
Benjamin Zander was born in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, England. His parents, Walter and Margarete (Gretl) Zander, had emigrated from Berlin in 1937 to escape the Nazis, and raised their four children: Michael, Luke, Angelica, and Benjamin. At home, his father would regularly sing and play piano after work.[1] Benjamin Zander is Jewish.

Who or what inspired you to take up conducting and pursue a career in music?
Conducting was a natural extension of my cello playing – like an airplane taking off from the runway. I applied for a job teaching cello and chamber music at a summer school in Lenox. After the Director offered me the job, we were having tea: “Do you know anyone who could conduct the orchestra this summer?” she enquired. “Oh, I’d love to do that!” I replied. “Are you very experienced?” she asked. “Oh very.” I assured her. That was before Google, so she couldn’t check! But was it a lie? No, not really. I was very experienced in playing the cello and coaching chamber music, so it was just a question of broadening the scope, painting on a larger canvas, as it were. Over the years I have learned more and more about what works in conducting (mostly from the players). I put a so-called “white sheet” on the stand of every musician in every orchestra I conduct and invite them to tell me what could make the experience better. Robin Wayne Zander (born January 23, 1953)[1] is an American musician, best known as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for the rock band Cheap Trick, but is also a solo artist. Zander was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 as a member of Cheap Trick.
Early life
Zander was born in Beloit, Wisconsin, and grew up in nearby Loves Park, Illinois.[2] He learned to play the guitar by age 12.[3] Zander graduated from Harlem High School in Machesney Park, Illinois.[4] After playing in high school bands in the 1960s,[5] he joined Brian Beebe to form the folk duo Zander & Kent in the early 1970s.[6]
