Career Summary

Jimmy Johnson was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1989 to 1999, finishing his career as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Over his nine years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 80-64-0. During his career he was a head coach for nine seasons, first with the Dallas Cowboys. He led the Cowboys for five seasons, compiling a record of 44-36-0. During his time leading the Cowboys the team won the Super Bowl in 1992 and 1993. His next head coaching stint was with the Miami Dolphins from 1996 to 1999, as he led the team to a 36-28-0 record. During his entire head coaching career, his two teams combined for a record of 80-64-0 across nine seasons including going 9-4-0 in the playoffs.

Johnson was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020 after his coaching career.

James E. Johnson (June 6, 1879 – January 19, 1942) was an American football player. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1969.

Biography

Johnson was born on June 6, 1879, in Edgerton, Wisconsin.[1] Johnson, one-half Stockbridge Indian, attended Carlisle Indian Industrial School from 1899 to 1903, where he starred on the Carlisle football team.[1][2] Coached by Pop Warner, the team was composed entirely of American Indian students and was a true national powerhouse in the early 20th century.[3] In 1903, Walter Camp named Johnson as the All-American quarterback.[1] Johnson also served as Carlisle's team captain in the same season.[1] Following his career at Carlisle, Johnson enrolled in Northwestern's Dental School and played on the football team during the 1904 and 1905 season

James William Johnson (born July 16, 1943) is an American sports analyst and former football coach. Johnson served as a head football coach on the collegiate level from 1979 to 1988 and in the National Football League (NFL) for nine seasons. He is the first head football coach to win both a college football national championship and a Super Bowl, achieving the former with University of Miami and the latter with the Dallas Cowboys.

Johnson held his first head football coaching position at Oklahoma State University from 1979 to 1983. He became Miami's head football coach in 1984 and guided the team to victory in the 1988 Orange Bowl.
