Willy Garte (2 April 1962 – 6 September 1998) was a Filipino singer and songwriter who rose to fame in the 1990s. He was a blind singer who popularized the songs "Bawal na Gamot", " Where is the Light", "Kay Lupit ng Dodhana", and others. Biography [ edit | edit wikitext ] Willy Garte was born to Juan Lagartija and Matilde Lucana Pombo on April 2, 1962 in Barangay Nena, San Julian. He contracted measles at the age of five and soon became blind. Although he had no formal education due to his disability, he learned to play a locally made guitar at a young age. As a child, he put together what is known in Eastern Samar as "kumbatchero" (from the Spanish "cumbachero"), a puerile version of a pop band, using recycled junks such as tin, soda bottles and cans of gas and indigenous materials.
