Erdem (born in 1960) is a Turkish director and screenwriter. He gave up his studies in history in his home country and in 1983 moved to Paris and earned a degree in film studies. He made his first feature film, A ay(Oh Moon), in 1988 in French-Turkish co-production. Afterwards, he made the drama Kaç para kaç(A Run For Money, 1999), which was the Turkish representative for Oscar in the category Best Foreign Film, and the comedy Korkuyorum Anne(Mommy, I'm Scared, 2004). His last film Bes vakit(Times and Winds, 2006) won the Golden Tulip and the FIPRESCI award at the International Film Festival in Istanbul in 2006. He has made many commercials and short films (Deniz Türküsü/ Song of the Sea, 1995; Ekimde Hiçbir Kere/ Anytime in October, 2006). In the National Theatre in Istanbul in 1991, he directed Jean Genet’s drama Les bonnes.

Reha Erdem: Filmmaker with clever minimalism

Minimalism has never been a common strategy in Turkish arts. Since Turkish audiences love pronounced depictions of feelings, events and relationships, Turkish artists generally tend to keep their narrative simple and rely on the apparent symbolism of the intrinsic or extrinsic event, with psychological affections also considered “events” by the Turkish audience.

On the other hand, such a tendency of the audience comes from their alert curiosity. An ordinary Turkish audience member, whether for a film or book, prefers not to watch or read in a pensive mood; rather, they seek the satisfaction of their expectations, which can only be fed by surprises, tragedies and other types of unambiguous scenario tricks. Yet, lowering the audience expectations and the need for surprises can create a place for minimalist narration.

woods on her way, in order to participate in life. The film, begins with her escape from an organized armed group
in the mountains. Hiding from the members of that organization and the police, she spends lonely days in the
mountains. Her purpose is to reach the big city, life itself or maybe the dreams of a big world she has never seen
or known. With her strong will, she manages to make room for herself within the eerie darkness and wildness of
nature. Finally dressed in civilian clothes she acquires, she leaves the mountains. Yet the plains are much more
dangerous, threatening and hurtful than the mountains. No matter how hard she tries and struggles, she fails to
manage to break the continuously shrinking circle around herself and reach the place she always dreams of. In
great disappointment, she returns to the mountains, to her loneliness. Now her revolt has turned into desperation.
