Foundation is a science fiction novel by American writer Isaac Asimov. It is the first book in the Foundation Trilogy (which later expanded into the Foundation series). Foundation is a cycle of five interrelated short stories, first published as a single book by Gnome Press in 1951. Collectively they tell the early story of the Foundation, an institute founded by psychohistorian Hari Seldon to preserve the best of galactic civilization after the collapse of the Galactic Empire.
Publication history
On August 1, 1941, Isaac Asimov proposed to John W. Campbell of Astounding Science Fiction that he write a short story set in a slowly declining Galactic Empire, based on the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Campbell liked the idea, and by the end of a two-hour meeting Asimov planned to write a series of stories depicting the fall of the first Galactic Empire and the rise of the second. Hari Seldon is the primary protagonist of the stories which comprise the original Foundation “novel.” The very opening words of this massive science fiction series is a biography of Seldon: “born in the 11,988th year of the Galactic Era, died 12,069. The biography then continues until the central element of his place within the narrative: creator of the new mathematical discipline of psychohistory which affords the possibility of foretelling future events on a mammoth scale using probabilistic algorithms.
Hardin is the Mayor of Terminus City, but that position has historically been little more than a political figurehead. Hardin, however, is determined to overcome this historical understanding which situates the Mayor as subordinate to the Board of Trustees. He turns out to be quite successful as he ultimately becomes de facto rule of the entire Foundation.
