Early Life and Family

Antonio Lucio Vivaldi was born on March 4, 1678, in Venice, Italy, into a musical family. His father, Giovanni Battista Vivaldi, was a barber turned professional violinist who played at the San Marco Basilica. This connection provided young Antonio with a strong foundation in music from an early age. Giovanni also took on the role of Antonio’s first violin teacher, setting the stage for his son’s future accomplishments.

Antonio Lucio Vivaldi[n 2] (4 March 1678 – 28 July 1741) was an Italian composer, virtuoso violinist and impresario of Baroque music. Regarded as one of the greatest Baroque composers, Vivaldi's influence during his lifetime was widespread across Europe, giving origin to many imitators and admirers. He pioneered many developments in orchestration, violin technique and programmatic music. He consolidated the emerging concerto form, especially the solo concerto, into a widely accepted and followed idiom.
