Rotarian Seth Landau from the Rotary Club of Mercer Island, Seattle, Washington State took him up and educated him.
Silas now a Senior Partner at SES Law Advocates LLP; an advocate of the High Court of Kenya; a pillar to his community and family; a mentor to many and most importantly a father to three adorable boys. To achieve such feat, he has overcome many odds and earned numerous accolades throughout the journey.
I caught up with Silas at his office to understand his life’s journey and how Rotary as a whole, played a part in his upbringing. He is charismatic and confident, yet a humble and empathetic person who is keen to have genuine and very engaging conversations.
Why the change of name?
When I joined The University of Nairobi to pursue my undergraduate degree in Law, I got involved in student politics. As part of my campaign strategy, I constituted a Political Bureau that acted as my advisory team.

Silas Jakakimba was born John Ouko Silas, but formally changed his name in honor of his Mbita Village, Kakimba, in 2011. At only 27 he became the youngest student to earn a Master’s in law at the University of Nairobi's Parklands Campus and for his feat Microsoft founder Bill Gates invited him for a chat in Washington.
Prime Minister Raila Odinga picked Jakakimba from the National Youth Vote Coalition to serve as his personal aide during the 2007 presidential campaign and for four years during the Grand Coalition government.
After the death of Homa Bay Senator Otieno Kajwang, Jakakimba, a PhD Candidate in International Law at the University of the Witwatersrand, threw his hat into the ring, seeking to replace the ebullient Senator, but halfway withdrew from the race

Silas Jakakimba is an advocate of the high court and a senior partner at SES Law Advocates. Previously, he served as a senior partner at Jakakimba & Lagat Advocates for four years. He worked closely with opposition leader and former prime minister Raila Odinga before parting ways.

Background
The lawyer had very humble start in life with his family struggling to provide food and school fees.
Born John Silas Ouko, he legally changed his name to Jakakimba to pay homage to his home village Kakimba in Mbita. His mother was a fishmonger and his father, a fisherman.
When his mother died, his father, who was a polygamist, sent him and his siblings to live with relatives. He stayed with his grandmother Dorina until Grade seven. He then moved back to his home and completed his KCPE at Kakiimba Primary School.
