Duncan ball biography

Duncan Ball is the multi-award-winning author of over seventy-five children’s books including the ever-popular series about Selby, the talking dog, and adventures of Emily Eyefinger, the girl who was born with an eye on the end of her finger. Duncan has always had a passion for poetry, especially of the short, rhyming kind, so it isn’t surprising that the Selby books are peppered with poetry like this one from the book, Selby’s Stardom:

Sue the Gymnast

A gymnast by the name of Sue

Once rubbed herself with superglue

Then climbed up on her trampoline

But stopped midway through her routine

Sue-perior, is how she’s feeling

She’s so stuck up – against the ceiling.

After many years Duncan’s publisher HarperCollins finally allowed him to write a book of just his poetry. The result was My Sister Has a Big Black Beard, containing forty-nine funny poems like these, below, and beautifully illustrated by Kerry Millard:

Duncan Ball (born February 1941) is an American-born Australian author who has written the children's series Selby (about a talking dog named Selby who tries to keep his secret away from his owners) and Emily Eyefinger (about a girl who has an eye on her finger).

Biography

Early life and education

Duncan was born in February 1941 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, and was one of three children. When he was four, his family moved to Alaska, where he went to primary school. In his teens, Duncan moved to Madrid, Spain where he learned to speak Spanish. He finished high school in the United States, studied at Northeastern University and, later, at the University of Paris (Sorbonne). He has a degree in Mathematics from Boston University.

Career

Ball moved to Sydney in 1974 and worked as an industrial chemist. He wrote a novel for adults and later changed jobs to editor of the School Magazine at the Department of Education of New South Wales. He continued to work there for a few years, then resign

Duncan Ball is an American-born Australian author who has written the children's series Selby (about a talking dog named Selby who tries to keep his secret away from his owners) and Emily Eyefinger (about a girl who has an eye on her finger). He also writes under the name of John St Claire. St can mean either Saint or Street and Duncan happens to live on the corner of John and Claire Streets in Sydney.

Duncan was born in 1941 in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S., and was one of three children. When he was 4, his family moved to Alaska, where he went to primary school. In his teens, Duncan moved to Madrid, Spain where he learned to speak Spanish. He finished high school back in the US, and eventually moved to Sydney, New South Wales, Australia and worked as an industrial chemist. He wrote a novel for adults and later changed jobs to editor of the School Magazine at the Department of Education of New South Wales.

He continued to work there for a few years, then resigned to become a full-time author, a profession which he continues today.
