Vice President Kamala D. Harris was born in Oakland, Calif. She refers to her time at Howard as her “formative years” where she first was introduced to her love of politics. After earning an undergraduate degree from Howard University and a law degree from the University of California, Hastings, she began her career in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. In 2003, Sen. Harris became the District Attorney of the City and County of San Francisco. Having completed two terms as the District Attorney of San Francisco, Kamala was elected as the first African-American and first woman to serve as California's Attorney General. In this role, she worked tirelessly to hold corporations accountable and protect the state’s most vulnerable people. Kamala D. Harris won election to the U.S. Senate in 2016, after having served as attorney general of California. The daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants, Harris became the first Senator of South Asian descent and the second African-American woman to serve in the chamber. In 2020, she became the first woman elected Vice President of the United States.
Kamala Devi Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was a breast cancer researcher from southern India, and her father, Donald Harris, was an economics professor from Jamaica. After her parents divorced, Harris moved to Canada with her mother and graduated from Westmount High School in Westmount, Quebec, in 1981. As a student at Howard University, a historically Black university, in Washington, DC, she interned for California Senator Alan Cranston. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science and economics in 1986.
