Chancellor

A fourth-generation physician whose paternal grandparents fled Germany in the early 1930s to build a new life in Mexico, Julio Frenk catalyzed his deep gratitude for the kindness of strangers into a lifelong mission to improve the health, education and well-being of people around the world.

Dr. Frenk became the seventh chancellor of UCLA on January 1, 2025. He also holds an academic appointment as distinguished professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management within the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. Prior to joining UCLA, he served as president of the University of Miami from 2015 to 2024, where he was also a tenured faculty member. From 2009 to 2015 he was the dean of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the T & G Angelopoulos Professor of Public Health and International Development, a joint appointment with the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. He is the first Latino to lead these institutions of higher education.

A former dean of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and federal secretary of health of Mexico, under his leadership, the University was invited to join the prestigious Association of American University (AAU), a national organization of leading research universities, entry into which is by invitation. Only 3 percent of the nation’s four-year institutions belong to the AAU.

During his tenure, UHealth, the University of Miami Health System, experienced a dramatic turnaround and initiated significant growth as South Florida’s only academic health system. Its Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center received a prestigious NCI designation from the National Cancer Institute, joining a highly select group as one of only two NCI-designated cancer centers in Florida, and one of just 71 across the nation.

Dr. Julio Frenk, a noted leader in global health and a renowned scholar, became the sixth president of the University of Miami on August 16, 2015. He also holds an academic appointment as Professor of Public Health Sciences at the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine and a secondary appointment as professor of Health Sector Management and Policy in the School of Business Administration.

Prior to joining the University of Miami, Dr. Frenk was dean of the faculty at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health since January 2009. While at Harvard, he was also the T & G Angelopoulos Professor of Public Health and International Development, a joint appointment with the John F. Kennedy School of Government.

He served as the minister of Health of Mexico from 2000 to 2006. There he pursued an ambitious agenda to reform the nation’s health system and introduced a program of comprehensive universal coverage, known as Seguro Popular, which expanded access to health care for more than 55 million previously uninsured Mexicans.
