A Profile of Star Wars' Padmé Amidala

Born Padmé Naberrie, Padmé Amidala served as the Queen—and later, Senator—of the planet of Naboo. She met and secretly married the Jedi Anakin Skywalker and had two children, Luke and Leia. Padmé played an important role in the politics of the Clone Wars and, before her tragic early death, planted the seeds for the Rebellion that would eventually overthrow Palpatine's Empire.

Padmé Amidala is a fictional character in the Star Wars franchise. She first appeared in the 1999 film The Phantom Menace as the teenage queen of the fictional planet Naboo. In the following two films of the prequel trilogy, Padmé becomes a member of the Galactic Senate and secretly marries Anakin Skywalker, a Jedi Knight. Anakin's fear of losing Padmé drives him toward the dark side of the Force, which results in his transformation into Darth Vader. Padmé eventually dies after giving birth to the twins Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa. Natalie Portman portrays Padmé in all three prequel films. In addition to films, Padmé appears in animated series, novels, comics and video games.

Creation

Padmé Naberrie, known publicly as Padmé Amidala, was a human female politician who became an influential figure in the declining days of the Galactic Republic. Amidala was elected Queen of Naboo at a young age, and led her people through the Trade Federation's invasion of the planet. With the help of the Jedi Order, Amidala was able to lead her people in liberating Naboo from the Federation. When her two terms as queen ended, there was a movement to amend the law so she could continue to serve, but she declined and instead, accepted the role of Senator of Naboo.
