A talent for making money matched only by its propensity to give it away. A university president who knew the first step to achieving your dreams was to ask. A bank’s marketing slogan … The story behind the transformative gift of $110 million from two Eccles family foundations to the University of Utah School of Medicine is one that involves a series of fortunate events, beginning with a warm day in Salt Lake City in the early fall of 1952.
Spence Eccles had just turned 18 years old when his parents, Spencer and Hope, dropped him off in front of the University Heights student apartments on the corner of 1300 East and 100 South. Beckoning just beyond was the University of Utah campus, where he was about to begin his freshman year.

Scope and Contents
The Spencer Eccles collection contains images of Eccles in various ski races, competitions and events. Spencer Eccles was a member of the University of Utah Ski Team of which there is a photograph in his collection. The collection also contains images of the Eccles family, and newspaper articles featuring Spencer Eccles during the 1950s. This collection consists of digital scans and Kodak thermal prints taken from original photographs that Spencer Eccles retains, none of the original photos were donated to the libary.

Biography
Spencer Fox Eccles is chairman emeritus of the Wells Fargo Intermountain Banking Region. For 40 years with First Security Bank and nearly two decades as its chairman and CEO, he carried on the Eccles leadership of the oldest multi-state bank holding company in the United States, a distinction First Security still held at the time of its historic merger with Wells Fargo in October 2000. Today, Mr. Eccles remains active not only in the national and international banking communities but also as a much-admired philanthropist, businessman and family man.
Mr. Eccles was born and raised in Ogden, Utah, the son of Spencer Stoddard Eccles and Hope Fox Eccles. The grandson of pioneering Utah industrialist David Eccles, he is a true “native son” of the West, who has invested his time and resources generously to help ensure the future vitality of Utah and its citizens.
