Vito Fossella (9 March 1965-) was a member of the US House of Representatives (R-NY 13) from 4 November 1997 to 3 January 2009 (succeeding Susan Molinari and preceding Michael McMahon) and the Borough President of Staten Island from 1 January 2022 (succeeding James Oddo).
Biography[]
Vito Fossella was born in Staten Island, New York City to a family of Irish and Italian descent; he was related to Democratic politicians James A. O'Leary and Frank Fossella. Fossella worked as a medical malpractice lawyer before serving in the city council from 1994 to 1997, having changed his political affiliation from Democrat to Republican in 1990 in a breach with family tradition. He went on to serve in Congress from 1997 to 2009, and he opted against running re-election after a DUI arrest and revalations that he was living with a female US Air Force colonel (with whom he fathered a child) while still being married. He later made a comeback to politics with Donald Trump's support, winning the office of Staten Island borough president in 2021.
