If the reputations of actors can be compared to shares in a company, there’s no doubt that Irangani Serasinghe’s has always been oversubscribed: public interest in her career in not just the cinema and television, but also the theatre, has never been matched by an adequate level of quality in coverage by the media. There’s never been a shortage of articles, of course, and Kumar de Silva’s sketchy yet comprehensive portrait of her does establish the links between several aspects of her life and family and the career she eventually chose.
Yet these are individual efforts which have, however laudable they may be, not been sustained. The truth is that Irangani, who turned 93 this week, has been more than just a definitive versatile actress in this country. Her contribut

Kala Keerthi Iranganie Roxanna Meedeniya, known widely as Iranganie Serasinghe, is a renowned actress in Sri Lankan cinema, theater, and television. Throughout her illustrious career, she has earned recognition for portraying motherly figures in various films and TV serials. Interestingly, she is also the aunt of President Ranil Wickramasinghe.
Born on 9th June 1927 in Mudungomuwa, Ruwanwella, Sri Lanka, Iranganie is the daughter of Joseph Hercules Meedeniya, who held the esteemed position of Rate Mahatmaya of Ratnapura, and Violet Ellawela. Her family had notable political connections, with her paternal grandfather, J. H. Meedeniya Adigar, serving as an uncontested member of the Ruwanwella seat in the State Council. Titled ‘Irangani ….. as told to kumardesilva’, is a vivid autobiography of the life of this legendary and much-loved stage, screen and television actress.
It takes readers from her carefree childhood days sailing down the Gurugoda Oya on paaruwas and the peace and quiet of Moodugomuwa, off Ruwanwella … from the Christmases and the Vesaks of her early years at the Mideeniya Walauwwa … from her school days at St. Bridget’s Convent where she remembers “wearing a hat with a veil to school”, and later Bishop’s College and its animated hostel life where the girls “used to eat anything and everything at midnight feasts” … to her dare-devil escapades at University when her sister Kamini and she “rode bicycles when good Sinhala girls were not supposed ride’.
The book also takes readers to her foray onto the stage first at University and then at the Lionel Wendt Theatre … through her two marriages, to Prof. S.B.
