Bruneian art

Bruneian art is art from the country of Brunei. Brunei's art includes paintings, jewelry, and clothing.

History

Art in Brunei was not a focus until the early 1950s, Brunei's government then took a stand to support culture. They created a building for artists to sell their works. In 1984, the art market had grown enough that it had to move to a larger space.[1]

Artists

Dato Paduka Shofry bin Abdul Ghafor is a local artist. His work is displayed at the Rainforest Gallery, which opened March 2014.[2] Dato is a manager and owner of the gallery. One of his works is called Home of Bruneian Art. Behind the art, it describes the painting of everyone's home. The painting is full of purples, burgundy, dark brown, and black.

Another of Dato pieces is Grey Sea. It has the "light and movement of the sea". Dato described it, saying, "As a work of art that is produced in contemporary Brunei, I perhaps can ponder that the absence of a solid object is a reflection of the state of a Bruneian psyche. Daria Dmitrieva is an artist trained in the fine arts in Russia, specializing in textile design and tapestry techniques. Her works, often compared to embroideries, are characterized by meticulous attention to detail and nuance. Inspired by nature in all its forms, she seeks to convey emotions of happiness, harmony and tranquility through her creations. Daria adopts a technique akin to pointillism, using small strokes to capture the ephemeral beauty of landscapes and plants.
Daria Dmitrieva draws her inspiration from nature, landscapes, plants and the seasons. Influenced by Impressionists and Pointillists such as Monet, Van Gogh, Cézanne and Signac, she also admires the works of Joan Mitchell. Her technique is characterized by the use of small strokes, creating a unique texture and depth, often compared to embroidery. Yasmin Jaidin is a Bruneian contemporary artist currently practicing in Brunei. Her practice revolves around materiality by working with media that can be found in the everyday like sugar, flour, grass and soil. She experiments with its physical state and is concerned with its ecology when it is displaced from one environment to another. She holds degrees at Goldsmiths and the University of Arts London, and has exhibited internationally at such venues as The National Art Center in Tokyo, UP Vargas Museum in Manila, the Manila Metropolitan Museum, and the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan. Her work exhibits a fidelity to the chosen material, combining minimalism and process into an object oriented practice.
