After the Bidding, Does Romance Follow? : Women ‘Buy’ Bachelors for Charity, and Some Report Having a Great Time
“Have bachelors, will sell” has become a popular and profitable personal ad for some charity groups.
In addition to raising tens of thousands of dollars for the March of Dimes, Big Brothers and other organizations, bachelor auctions have become another wrinkle in the dating game of the ‘80s.
What happens after such an auction? Does romance follow after a woman has paid for a bachelor and his carefully packaged date? Or does it end in the same way some blind dates do--horribly?
In November, the Orange County chapter of the March of Dimes put 21 eligible men and their date packages on the auction block. More than 700 women showed up at the Hotel Meridien in Newport Beach to buy dates with doctors, lawyers, business executives, a KNBC-TV news anchor and an assortment of young hunks.
The auction raised $44,000, the national record for this type of charity event. The dates ranged from nights on the town to a six-day trip to Europe. Successful bids ranged from $300 to $5

Dating auction fundraiser a huge success
FARMINGTON – The packed auditorium roared with shouts and screams as a student made an audacious bid: “50 dollars” he said, rising from his seat.
A dating auction is a simple procedure; an eligible bachelor or bachelorette is presented to an audience, the “auctioneer” provides a short biography, the co-host asks a few questions with the wit of something from The Dating Game and then the bidding begins.
Bids started at $2 and “weren’t expected to go above 10,” says organizer Kate Turpen. However, some bids exceeded $80 that night.
Turpen, a UMF student and dormitory Community Advisor, organized the auction with Channa Schroff to raise money for Relay for Life, a cancer research foundation. What was planned as a simple and small affair exploded with over 150 attendees.
“We had to move to a larger room,” Turpen said.“It was so much more than I was expecting.”
The auction raised more than $800 for the charity.
All proceeds go directly to Relay for Life, a foundation that funds cancer research through the America
