Pope Francis, in appointing Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz as his envoy, stressed in a special letter that the shrine of Our Lady in Kodeń is a place of miracles, where many people come to pray and entrust their lives to Mary.
The Pope had named Cardinal Dziwisz, archbishop emeritus of Kraków, as the papal envoy to the 300th anniversary of the coronation of the image of Our Lady of Kodeń, Queen of Podlasie – Mother of Unity.
In his homily at Mass on Tuesday, the former secretary of St. John Paul II underlined that then-Cardinal Karol Wojtyła came in a pilgrimage to Kodeń before his election as Bishop of Rome.
“The future Pope,” he said, “drew attention to a particular feature of the Mother of Christ: ‘Mary unites the People of God. And we find ourselves in a land where this unification of the People of God had a special historical significance. It was here that the meeting of the separated Churches – the Western and the Eastern one – took place.’”

Krakau - Stanislaw Dziwisz served as Karol Wojtyla's secretary for almost 40 years. Most recently, the cardinal categorically defended the former Pope from Poland against accusations. The Vatican rejected accusations against him. Dziwisz is now 85.

On Tuesday evening, he preached in a firm voice for 15 minutes at a mass in honour of St. Adalbert in the Adalbert Church on the market square. At the reception afterwards, the parish priest wished him all the best for his 85th birthday. The long-serving secretary of Pope John Paul II (1978-2005) celebrates his birthday this Saturday.

Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, Archbishop emeritus of Krakow (Poland), was born on 27 April 1939 in Raba Wyżna, Poland. He was ordained a priest on 23 June 1963 by the-then Auxiliary Bishop of Krakow, Karol Wojtyła.
In 1967 he received a licentiate in theology from the Faculty of Theology of Krakow, and in 1981 he received a doctorate in theology.
He began his pastoral ministry as parochial vicar, and in October 1966 Archbishop Wojtyła appointed him as his chaplain and secretary. When Cardinal Wojtyła of Krakow was elected Pope, he appointed Mons. Dziwisz as his personal secretary; he held this office until the death of Pope John Paul II on 2 April 2005.
On 7 February 1998 he was appointed titular Bishop of San Leone and Adjunct Prefect of the Pontifical Household. He was ordained Bishop by John Paul II on 19 March 1998. On 29 September 2003 he was raised to the dignity of Archbishop.
Pope Benedict XVI appointed the new Cardinal as Archbishop of Krakow on 3 June 2005.
