Prof. Khleif is a medical oncologist, immunologist and immune therapist. He is a Biomedical Scholar and professor at Georgetown University. Director the Loop laboratories for Immuno-oncology. His research program is focused on understanding mechanisms of resistance to immunotherapy, the rational combination of immune-therapeutics, the suppressive mechanisms of the immune system, and T cell plasticity and therapeutic reprogramming. Prior to transferring his research program to Georgetown University in 2017, Dr. Khleif served as the Director of Georgia Cancer Center, Augusta University. Dr. Khleif was an intramural NIH scientist for 20 years where he served as a leader of the Cancer Vaccine Section, leading some of the fist clinical trials in immunotherapy. He also served as Special Assistant to the FDA Commissioner. Dr. Khleif has many high-impact peer-review research. He is the editor of 3 books in immunotherapy and cancer therapeutics. Dr. Khleif serves on many national and international professional committees. He is the Chair of the NRG Immunotherapy Committee, member of the Na

Samir N. Khleif, MD
Dr. Khleif currently serves as the Director of the State of Georgia Cancer Center, Georgia Regents University Cancer Center and the Cancer Service Line. He is a Georgia Research Alliance Distinguished Cancer Scientist and Clinician and holds a professorship in Medicine, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Graduate Studies at Georgia Regents University. Dr. Khleif’s research program focuses on the molecular mechanisms of the interaction between cancer and the immune system. He received his medical degree at the University of Jordan, Amman Jordan. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Ohio and his fellowship in Medical Oncology at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Bethesda, Maryland. His laboratory works on understanding the mechanisms of cancer-induced immune suppression, and utilizing this knowledge for the development of novel immune therapeutics and vaccines against cancer. His team designed and conducted some of the first cancer vaccine clinical trials directed against specific genetic changes in cancer cells.

Samir N. Khleif, MD, Director
Biomedical Scholarand Professor
As an immunologist and immune therapist, my interest has been in developing novel immune therapeutics, cancer vaccines and delineating the mechanisms of resistance to immunotherapy. My research program is translational tumor immunology focused on understanding mechanisms through which the immune system and cancer cells interact and how to overcome tumor tolerance in developing therapeutic approaches.
What is Immunotherapy Research?
Cancer immunotherapy is the science of treating tumors using our body's own immune system. Under normal conditions tumors evade the immune elimination by several mechanisms that range from loss of cell surface antigenic peptides, expression of immunosuppressive checkpoint molecules such as PDL1 and by establishing an immune-suppressive microenvironment mediated by cell populations such as regulatory T-cells, myeloid-derived suppressive cells and IDO-expressi
